Who Burned the Korans and Who Cares

Today we found out from various news sources that they have discovered the 5 people 'responsible' for burning the Korans at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, and we were also informed that they are facing disciplinary action; which could include losing rank!
Riots in Afghanistan over burned Korans
No one yet knows the full results of General John Allen's investigation of the "accidental burning of the Korans and other religious documents."  But what we do know is that the 5 'responsible' are "military leaders and an Afghan-American translator."  The 'accused' removed the books and materials from a prison after realizing the prisoners were using them to write extremist messages back and forth.  The materials were put into storage, then later 'accidentally' burned.  Some afghan bystanders realized what was going on and went crazy.

There is already talk of disciplinary action within the military, but senior afghan clerics are calling for those responsible to be tried publicly in Afghanistan court.  Thankfully a senior US official told a news publication "We know that there's a real interest in trying the guilty parties in afghan court, and that's something we're not prepared to do."

The problem I see is that the people responsible did nothing wrong.  If they didn't destroy the materials who knows how many soldiers would have been hurt because of the extremist writings.  This wasn't an accident, the wrong person found out and spread the news, and now our people are apologizing...again.  The afghan people are seeing this as a slap in the face because they want to, even though it is not being done out of spite.  They hate us being there, that's a fact.  One afghan man was reported saying, "Bring the Americans responsible to us, we will kill them ourselves."  They are going to try and use this situation as an excuse to get our people out faster, just wait and see.

Now General Allen is making all troops stationed in Afghanistan undergo re-training on how to handle islamic religious materials because that's how the afghans would do it....right?  The people in afghanistan don't treat our religious materials or signs of our country with respect, why should they expect it from us.  We aren't there as an invasion force, we are there to help them.  I don't agree with the reasons for our wars, but I support the men and women who fight in them, and so should the ungrateful people in Afghanistan.

I can't wait to see what the General's investigation turns up, seeing as how he is allowing Afghanistan government officials 'assist' his people.

  1. We just need to pull out of the middle east and let them kill each other. Mess with us again and pay the consequences.
